Makerere University on Jan.23 started counting students an exercise scheduled to last 20 days.
This is per directive by a visitation committee appointed by President Museveni in November to inquire into the affairs of the institution which has been riddled with strikes and intrigue. Dr. Abel Rwendiere, the Chairman of the committee said for a student to be counted they are required to have a copy of their admission letter and the university Identity card for continuing students. For those in first year, they are required to carry an admission letter, registration forms and a copy of the National Identity card. Rwendeire who warned that those who won’t take part will no longer be recognized students said the head count will take place at each of the ten colleges in the university.
Also, lecturers have been given forms for them to submit details from qualification, research performance to the number of students supervised in the previous three years. Makerere University is estimated to have more than 30,000 students. According to Rwendiere, the exercise will help them establish the exact number of students and staff in the institution.
