Male circumcision: Could it lead to a bad sex life?

The study did not involve many religiously circumcised men – Jews and Muslims, for example. But even with these factors taken into account, the data pointed in the same direction. The statistical analyses also took a long list of additional relevant factors into account, including:

• Age

• Cultural background

• Religious background

• Marital status

• Levels of education

• Household income

• Age at first intercourse

• Number of sex partners

• Frequency of sexual activity with one partner in the past year

“We adjusted for all these factors in an attempt to ensure that circumcision is the actual cause, and that the link isn’t attributable to other factors.”

Bottom-line results were clear

Frisch mentions an example of how things get muddled up if researchers do not adjust for possible sources of error when they work with statistics:

“If, for instance, you look at people who drink lots of beer, you’ll see that they face an increased risk of developing lung cancer, compared to those who don’t drink much,” he says. “But it’s not the drinking itself that causes the lung cancer. There just happens to be a correlation between drinking and smoking, and it is actually the smoking that causes the lung cancer.”

These kinds of error sources were taken into account, and the bottom-line results were clear:

“We’re seeing a consistent picture. Even though most circumcised men – and their women – do not have problems with their sex lives, there is a significantly larger group of circumcised men and their female partners who experience frequent problems in achieving orgasm, compared to couples where the man is not circumcised.”

In addition, there are significantly more women with circumcised men, who experience vaginal pains during intercourse or feel that their sexual needs are not met.

Further studies needed

Frisch hopes this new study will be replicated by researchers in other countries and cultures.

“That way we can ascertain whether this phenomenon applies to Danes only or whether it extends into other cultures too,” he says. “All in all, I have a humble approach to our findings, so I would also like to see whether other Danish studies would reach the same conclusions.”

Study resonates internationally

According to Frisch, the study has received a great deal of international attention. For example, he has been contacted by politicians in California, who are very pleased with the results of the study because they want to ban circumcision in their federal state.

Others are less excited, saying the research is controversial.

“This is a highly sensitive issue, and some people oppose the publication of this kind of research. Some people have actually tried to stop the publication of our article,” he explains.

A question of ethics

Certain groups and individuals are lobbying in favour circumcising all men, explains Frisch. Not necessarily out of religious concern, but because they believe that circumcision has a health-promotional effect. In Africa, for instance, there are indications that circumcision could reduce the risk of HIV infection.

  1. Circumcision alters sex dramatically. Foreskin feels REALLY good.

Informed adults can decide for themselves. Forced genital cutting is unethical.

  2. Unfortunately I was cut, I don’t like its un-natural look, I lost a lot of sensitivity, I only can finish manually. It was an unnecessary procedure that I regret each day.

    • Same here! When very young, I consented to circumcision, was happy. Puberty comes on and I find it is mutilation. I did not consent to circumutilation. USA medical groups did not tell the truth, the whole truth then about circ just as they aren’t truthful now. Non surgical restoration helps that when naked my penis is not advertising for circ or stupidity; I take comfort in feeling secure cozy comfort 24/7; feeling nude not naked; no longer seeing a sucker’s scar aka HIS signature saying “I was HERE!” and BYEEeee!
Just to say my first orgasm felt like i had to piss bad. My first intercourse wasn’t fireworks but sparklers.

  3. Yes it is circumcised men develop that hard thick layer on the heard of their penis

  4. Then why the hullabaloo millions of adverts about the need for male circumcission if these are the after effects? Sorry for those who have already fallen prey and a watch out call to those not yet

    • Forced and coerced foreskin amputation is all about power over others. Key word is ‘FORCED’. So don’t expect truth, compassion, nice, fair, or equal treatment. The circ push comes from cultures that see circ bloodletting as holy salvation and that forced circ abuse was done to them so to honor their group, they push circ on others. The USA (me) had been forced, coerced circ up to 90% newborn males now down to 54% because we are fighting back by educating all about circ. In 1914 was published in a medical journal the goal to Circumcise the World. A few years ago this was again said by HIV researchers who push circ, Africa first, then China to start. It’s places wherever PSI Population Services International goes to before. Besides pushing their customs on nations, it is a money maker by making an industry that didn’t exist and isn’t needed. Which is funded by others (mostly USA tax payers), but they reap the profits from: widespread use of their newly designed circ devices; setting up and overseeing circ centers, doing invented studies that support the answers they want; and selling harvested foreskins to the world bio industries – the biggest company is non profit (they’re making money and ‘world’ connections) called ATCC American Type Culture Collection. Infant foreskin fetches the most at $471 USD, older is less $, especially after puberty so mature adult foreskin is worth least, because what they take from the foreskins is powerful highly useful stem cells called fibroblasts which are used in facial cream and hair growth tonic (Oprah), research testing, bandages. The bulk of these infant stem cells (blasts) will turn into the penis’ primary sensor array, the frenular loop. So Billions US Dollars. The USA spends $2 million on lube just to get by. It’s very clear it’s about money, not about people being the game is a “cut and release” program with no aftercare (or thought) I know two men ciut as adults. One said he no has no pleasure during intercourse and foreplay is painful. The other said he expected loss of please and sensitivity but now afterwards, said he just may as well use his elbow for the amount of pleasure he receives. Those pushing circ say there’s little or no loss of sexual pleasure. I will say this may be true for a some but some are ruined for life. Circ straitjackets the penis by its own skin. Please see these video testimonies from African men who feel abused, cheated, lied to, damaged from circ programs; http://www.VMMCproject.org

  5. “This is the clear-cut conclusion of a new Danish research article…”

Actually, this study is a few years old (2011).

    • I have a comment awaiting moderation saying the same thing. There may be too many links in it, or some of the words might banned, so here’s some of it again:

Some other studies suggesting downsides to male circumcision:

      Sorrells (2007)
“Circumcision ablates the most sensitive parts of the pen-s.”

Kim and Pang 2006 (255 men circumcised as adults)
“About 6% answered that their s-x lives improved, while 20% reported a worse s-x life after circumcision.”

      Bronselaer et al, 2013
“For the glans pen-s, circumcised men reported decreased s-xual pleasure and lower org-sm intensity”

  6. we should clearly also research the ty[e of circumcision
all foreskin removed ?Only some removed with penile skin still adequate to cover erect penis with stretch
    Frenulum intact or removed?
Circumcision with only half of glans exposed and frenulum intact still preserves it all
Tight cut with frenulum excised is analogous to FGM call it MGM
    let us not overcut

  7. Consent is the central problem with both FGM and MGM, in that an elective procedure is forced by parents on their children’s genitalia for no medical reason.

Irreversible elective procedures can and must be delayed until consent can be obtained from the PATIENT.

For consent to be valid, the patient must be aware of the short term complications, the long term prognosis, alternative treatments, delayed treatment or no treatment.

To proceed without valid consent from the patient, regardless of the gender of the patient, age, religion, background or what is actually removed, the operator commits: surgical assault, actual bodily assault, sexual assault (pedophilia in a minor), violation of human rights and violation of bodily autonomy.

  8. I love my sex life…my uncut flesh gives both my fiancee and I orgasms and I don’t experience anything like premature ejaculations or erectile dysfunction.my worry had always been “what if?!”
Indeed the worry came to life when friends in university years succumbed to govt campaigns to chop off and are now full of relationship breakups and low sex lives?
As for my sons…I’ll give them time to consent to that irreplaceable procedure

  9. It has ruined so many relationships for me I can’t even begin to describe. This is not just life changing but life destroying. I can never finish, I never plateau. Their is no love in love making for me. It feels like I am being perpetually raped. How this is common I will never understand. What kind of sick joke is this? Why would ANYONE want to force this on someone?

  10. I was circumcised as an adult through own choice for no reasons other than it looking good. Been married at the time for 15 years. Now 65. So I experienced first handedly with and without foreskin. Let me tell you. It only has HUGE benefits. Forget health reasons. Sensitivity, enjoyment, looks every sexual activity is 10 fold better. Speak to other adult men who have experienced it both ways like me, and all will agree its better by far in every way. If these adult males experience the huge benefit, why not do it for your child and save him the embarrasement to do it as an adult. The parent must do whats best for his child. The debate surrounding this matter, is emotional in my view, and negative comments are made by people who are not in the know. So, it simply is better in every respect. Forget health reasons.

    • If you’re happy to be circumcised, that’s great. Plenty of men circumcised as adults regret it though.

Some other adult men who have experienced it both ways:

Adult film star Rocco Siffredi (the “Italian Stallion”) called his decision “catastrophic” and that being intact “you can feel much more fun”.

      Adult film star Erik Rhodes
“So to answer the question, after getting all that out… yes i do regret it. I should have just looked for other options before letting some crazy a–hole take a knife to my d-ck and yes i have lost sensitivity. It’s just not the same.”

      Regular guy Nick Kusturis
“After the circumcision I felt nothing, no sensation at all. I knew something wasn’t right, but I just thought if I waited, everything would get back to normal. So I waited, I was in denial for the longest time. One day it just hit me that this was not going to change.”
(search for “Circumcised at 18” on YouTube to hear his story)

      Regular guy hbciba
“The old saying about the palm of your hand vs. the back is an understatement- the nerve endings in my foreskin gave me a completely different dimension of sensation, but now it’s gone. ”
(search for “Got Circumcised as an Adult (Just saw the Penn & Teller episode)” on YouTube)

Kim and Pang 2006 studied 255 men circumcised as adults and found that:
“About 6% answered that their sex lives improved, while 20% reported a worse sex life after circumcision.”
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17155977

    • Maybe you should think about the effect circumcision has on the woman’s sexual experience. After only being with uncut men my whole life, I recently started a relationship with a circumcised man. The experience was shocking and I had to end the relationship. The penis head was dry and calloused ( he was only 35 and cut as baby) I got friction burns and tears ( which I have never ever had with uncut men ) He had to pound and bang away for ages to just feel anything in his penis, which was excruciating for me. He took ages to orgasm and I actually think he didn’t really enjoy sex. I told him to stop the terrible thrusting but he said he could not feel sensation at the top of his penis, only from the mid to bottom of his penis and couldn’t orgasm otherwise. I had to use so much lubrication just to bear it. Fortunately I have experienced painless sex with many uncut men and couldn’t have a life with that kind of sex and ended the relationship. I was heartbroken as we really liked each other. I did extensive research afterwards on this subject. I found so many women describing exactly my experiences. Sadly most of the women were muslin or African and thought this was just how sex should be. Painful, uncomfortable with dryness and friction. Those that had an uncut man afterwards said they couldnt believe the difference. But no man wants to talk about it as it’s too sensitive taboo subject. Imagine realising that you have lost so much pleasure in your life from an un medically necessary procedure. When I read up on why men have a foreskin it made total sense why I never had pain with uncut men. The foreskin protects the glans, so it’s soft in the woman, the foreskin glides in the vagina to not cause friction or tearing in the delicate vaginal walls, and the foreskin prevents vaginal moisture from being pushed out of the vagina. I read that cut men need long hard banging thrusts to feel the sensations at the base as they lose so much sensitivity in the top part of the penis. I honestly could never be with a cut man again and think the whole procedure is barbaric. Especially on a baby or a child. The foreskin is like the man’s clitorius. And it’s there for a reason. Imagine cutting off your eyelids and having your eyeballs exposed all the time. Of course the sensation is going to go and keratinisation of the penis is natures ways of trying to protect a dismemberment of an organ. And the poor men cut as babies will never experience the full orgasmic sensations of an intact penis. It should be their choice as an adult not barbarically abused in this way as a tiny baby. Shocking and shameful procedure.
