Man faces trial for damage of Museveni’s portrait

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court has set November 30th, 2022 date for trial of Robert Mugabi, a boda boda rider accused of damaging the portrait of the president. Mugabi is battling one count of malicious damage after being charged last week.

He appeared on Monday before the Buganda Road Grade One Magistrate, Siena Owomugisha. Court heard that on November 3rd, 2022 while at the UBC building in Kampala Central Division, Mugabi willingly and unlawfully damaged an A2 framed photo of General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of Uganda.

According to the prosecution, the damaged photo was valued at Shillings 300,000 and was the property of Moses Daki, who deals in photo frames. The prosecution led by State Attorney Lydia Nakato told the court that investigations into the case are complete and asked the court to set a trial date. Mugabi, 30, a resident of Nankuwadde Bulenga in Wakiso district maintains his innocence.

Owomugisha sent him back to Luzira prison until November 30th when he will return for the commencement of the trial. According to the Penal Code Act of Uganda, any person who wilfully and unlawfully destroys or damages any property commits an offense and is liable to imprisonment of five years if found guilty.
