Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mbale city authorities are locked up in a fierce fight with Orient City Cleaners limited over the collection of garbage from Mbale central market. Perez Wambedde, the Chairperson of Mbale Central Market says the fight stems from their decision to contract Orient City Cleaners limited to collect garbage from the market.
According to Wambedde, they decided to contract Orient City Cleaners limited to collect garbage from th market at Shillings 500,000 daily for one year because of the city authorities had failed to handle the job even after charging them Shillings 800,000 daily.
Latif Magambo, the Managing Director of Orient City Cleaners limited says that all was going well until Monday when the Mbale city authorities through the Resident City Commissioner Ahamada Washaki ordered verbally to stop collecting garbage at Mbale central market as the city planned to take over the work.
He explains that on Tuesday morning, the city authorities sent trucks to Mbale central market to collect garbage but it was stopped by vendors on grounds that they had already contracted Orient city cleaners limited for the job.
Mbale City Public Relations Officer James Kutosi, says that the city authorities want to take over the garbage collection because Orient City Cleaners limited has failed to perform its work as expected.
He claims that sometimes the company takes an entire week without collecting garbage from Mbale central market, which has made the market look too dirty exposing the lives of vendors and their customers to infection.
