Mbarara city suspends boda boda election due to protests

Mbarara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The authorities in Mbarara City have halted the elections for the top leadership of the Boda Boda riders following protests and the storming of the City Council offices by a group of riders.

The proposed election method, utilizing electoral colleges, was met with opposition from some riders who prefer adult suffrage as outlined in their constitution. They expressed their discontent by protesting and accusing the Town Clerk of disregarding their constitution.

Mbarara City Town Clerk, Asse Abireebe Tumwesigye, announced the suspension of the elections after consulting with the city security committee. They plan to address the concerns raised by the protesting riders before proceeding with the elections.

Sadious Owokunda, the Former Chairperson of the Mbarara City Boda Boda Operators Association, criticized the lack of stakeholder consultation and the short time frame provided for the elections.

Christopher Byaruhanga, the Vice Chairperson of the association, raised concerns about the electoral college system proposed in the roadmap, stating that it limits their voting rights as outlined in their constitution.

Byaruhanga also questioned the motives behind the roadmap, suggesting that it may not serve the best interests of the riders.

James Mwesigye, the Mbarara Resident City Commissioner, warned against further protests, threatening strong action if they continue.

Aron Nyakugiira, the chairperson of the Ntare stage, requested security and the opportunity to hold elections at Kakyeka stadium using the adult suffrage system.

Abireebe suspended the elections until Friday to allow for further discussions and a final resolution.
