Mityana mob intercepts cattle thieves, burns motorcycle

Mityana, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Residents of Miseebe Central in Bulera Sub County, Mityana District are appealing for help to stop the rampant theft of livestock in their area.

The appeal came after residents intercepted a group of suspected thieves who were carrying a calf and several goats allegedly stolen from Kyetume and Nalyankanja villages in Bulera sub-county. But as soon as they were intercepted the suspects escaped through a nearby bush, abandoning the motorcycles and the animals on the road.

Miseebe Village chairperson Edith Namayanja said that after failing to arrest the suspect thieves, the residents burnt the abandoned motorcycle to ashes. A group of other suspected thieves who were moving on a separate motorcycle changed their route to avoid the mob.

George Kayizzi, the leader of the vigilante group said that they chased the suspected thieves through various villages in vain but hastens to add that the rate of theft of animals and that coffee is increasing in their area. Another cow was stolen last week by unknown people

Ronald Ssenabulya, one of the area residents faulted the Police in Mityana for releasing suspects on a bond without taking them to courts of law for prosecution. The residents also exchanged with the Policemen attached to Mutetema for attempting to stop them from burning the motorcycle.

Mityana District Chairman Patrick Nshimye Mugisha commended the residents for the effort to stop criminals in their area.

Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that incidents of livestock theft but added that they have increased enforcement activities and set up road checkpoints to track down thieves. Kawala added that every person is asked to present proper documentation before transporting animals from one place to another.
