Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Moroto municipality has received waste management equipment worth Shillings 10 million thanks to Welthunger, an implementing partner on a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene- WASH project. The equipment consisting of ten wheelbarrows, gumboots, rakes, hand gloves, and spades among others were delivered to the municipal council offices on Monday.
Moroto municipality has been grappling with the challenge of garbage management due to limited resources. Ismail Mohammed, the Mayor of Moroto municipality, says that they have heightened their preparations to attain the city status and their major focus is on proper garbage management. Mohammed says the municipal council has been struggling to manage solid waste because of limited resources and the lack of equipment.
According to Mohammed, the continuous piling of garbage all over the municipality forced him to approach the Welthunger organization for support. ‘’I’m very happy for the support Welthunger has offered to us, this equipment is going to improve the sanitation and hygiene within our municipality and the city to be,’’ Mohammed said.
Mohammed also noted, although they have received the equipment, people still have a negative mindset on garbage management, and more sensitization is required.
William Stephen Elilu, the programs manager of WASH at Welthunger, says that the municipal council requested for their support to improve the hygiene around town.
Elilu said they considered supporting the municipality on the grounds that there was a lot of garbage scattered all over the town where they are implementing a Wash project aimed at improving sanitation and hygiene in the communities.
John Ojangole, a vendor on Labour line urged the municipal authorities to consider sensitizing people on how to manage garbage to stop the practice of littering. Ojangole observed that the rivers around Town have been turned into a dumping ground for garbage and yet the same water is used for domestic consumption.
He urged the municipal council to pass bylaws to help protect the rivers and push for proper management of garbage.
