Moroto, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Moroto district COVID-19 task force has launched a public sensitization campaign aimed at raising awareness about coronavirus among the rural communities.
The campaign was officially launched on Monday by the RDC Moroto, John Ken Lochap at the district headquarters during the 7th meeting attended by development partners across the district.
Lochap said the campaign is supported by different partners including Mercy Corps, Karamoja Development Forum, and doctors without borders.
The task force endorsed the use of open air messages to target the rural population who may not have access to radio or other source of information on the control measures to the pandemic.
Edward Eko, the Senior Principal Chief Administrative Officer Moroto noted that using open air messages was the best way to reach illiterate members of the community who do not have access to the mainstream media like radio and television.
He said the campaigning should target mainly the Tepeth community, a minority community in Moroto district living around the mountains, where the illiteracy rate is very high.
“This campaign should be supported by partners because we have a lot of people who cannot read and write. They can’t even get access to information on radio. So as a task force we need to target them.” said Eko at the meeting chaired by the RDC.
Partners have further agreed to support translation of approved messages into Ngakarimojong language in order to scale up awareness about the virus and its prevention.
Dr. Charles Onyang Omuudu, the DHO called for team work in the fight against coronavirus. He urged partners working in Moroto to support the taskforce in implementing the president’s directives on control measures.
The DPC Jude Nasucha vowed to implement the directives in order to mitigate the spread.
On Saturday, the police in Moroto arrested at least 14 bar owners for defying the directive to close the bars. Uganda Radio Network has established that most of them were on Monday released on police bond.
