Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mukono Municipal Council has set up a seven-member committee to investigate the town clerk, Godfrey Kisekka, and his deputy, Luboyera Majerani over unpaid hotel bills resulting from the purported committee sittings.
The committee members are led by Richard Nsanga, as chairperson. The other members are Twaibu Nkumbitebbawelimye, Annet Nafuna, Constantine Kkanga, Ronald Mukasa, Vincent Lubwama, and Deogratious Kayongo.
It came after the Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament, Betty Nambooze told the council that the two officials sought services from Alvers Hotel along Katosi road but left without settling the bills.
Nambooze told the council that the hotel presented to her bills equivalent to Shillings 60 million indicating expenditures on alcohol and food consumed by over thirty people. She noted that the invoices indicated that the team was attending a committee meeting, yet none of the municipal committees exceeded ten people.
Nambooze told the council that her investigations show that the municipal officials feast in luxurious hotels and asked the hotels to demand payment from the municipal finance department.
Vincent Lubwama, the Kauga LC III councilor moved a motion for the establishment of a special committee to investigate the technical staff in regard to the said invoices and their failure to clear. Due to the limited space at the Municipal headquarters for council meetings, the council meetings take place at Alvers and Collin Hotel.
Rogers Bazanya, the Deputy speaker of Mukono municipality, who presided over the council session tasked the committee to investigate the claims since the council is sure that all bills for the sittings held at Alvers were settled.
Mukono Town Clerk, Godfrey Kisekka acknowledged receiving a similar complaint about bills that are not adding up but said that most of the bills were signed by his deputy, Majerani Luboyera without his authorization.
He revealed that he had tasked Alvers hotel to compile all the unpaid invoices and forward them to his office to assist him with the ongoing audits into the matter.
Bazanya has tasked the town clerk to come up with a report and submit it to the probe committee, saying that the council can not only rely on audits conducted by him yet he is also mentioned in the claims.
The Deputy Town Clerk, Luboyera couldn’t be reached for a comment as he left the council session before adjournment and switched off his known mobile phones.
