Mulago overwhelmed after over 300 turn up for free Women’s Day check up

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Hundreds of women seeking free treatment at Mulago Women’s Specialised Hospital were turned away due to the high turn up. The hospital announced that it would offer free health services from 7th-8th March in commemoration of the Women’s Day.

As early as 7.00 am on the final day, women had queued outside waiting to enter the hospital. Women who arrived after 10.00 am at the hospital seeking free treatment were denied access to the hospital by the security guards.

A police guard at the entrance of the hospital told women to go back home because the hospital was no longer receiving patients because the bug number.

Some women URN reporter spoke to said that they were disappointed to have missed the opportunity to receive free treatment.

Milly Nankambwa a market vendor at Kalerwe market says she arrived at the hospital ten minutes after ten only to be denied entry.

“I heard the advert on radio and came here. I missed work to come and utilize this opportunity since I hear this place is very expensive. But when we came here we were just sent away.” Nankambwa says.

Hajjat Fatumah, a resident of Bukoto says that she came for free medical check-up however after arriving at 10:00 am, she was denied entry.

Rukia Nakawala a health worker and mother of two from Seguku was seen pleading with health workers to help her access the hospital. Nakawala says that she was forced to return home after being denied entrance.

However Hospital management denied chasing women away.

Dr. Jolly Nakunda, the Deputy Executive Director of Mulago Women Specialised Hospital says the hospital is not aware of any women who were sent back home.

According to management, the hospital had estimated to treat 200 women, but so far, more than 300 have been treated.
