High drama in World Cup as Japan qualify, Germany and Belgium go out

Doha, Qatar | XINHUA |  Germany forward Thomas Muller described his team’s early elimination from the 2022 FIFA World Cup as an “absolute catastrophe” and hinted he might have played his last international match.

A Kai Havertz brace fired Germany to a 4-2 win over Costa Rica in their final group match on Thursday, but Japan’s victory over Spain meant Hansi Flick’s side finished third in Group E, behind Spain on goal difference.

“It’s unbelievably bitter for us because we thought our result would have been enough,” Muller said. “It’s a feeling of powerlessness.”

It marks the second consecutive time that Germany have failed to reach the World Cup knockout stage following their dismal showing in Russia four years ago when they finished last in their group as defending champions.

Muller, who has scored 10 goals across four World Cup editions, did not guarantee he would continue in the national team.

“For me personally, this is an absolute catastrophe. If this was my last game, it was a huge pleasure,” the 33-year-old said. “We experienced incredible moments together. In every game, I tried to leave my heart on the pitch. I’ve done it with love.”

Japan winners over Spain

A dramatic night of the FIFA World Cup saw Japan come back from a goal down to beat Spain 2-1 and qualify for the last 16 as Group E winners ahead of Spain on Thursday.

The evening looked to be going to script for the two European powerhouses, as Spain and Germany took the lead in their respective matches, with Alvaro Morata heading Spain ahead in the 11th minute, while Serge Gnabry gave Germany a lead against Costa Rica.

However, the Spanish failed to turn their 80 percent of ball possession into more clear-cut chances, while Germany squandered several options to increase their lead before halftime.

Ritsu Doan equalized for Japan with a left-footed shot in the 48th minute and then combined with fellow substitute Kaoru Mitoma to set up Ao Tanaka three minutes later to put Japan ahead.

That goal meant Germany were out of the tournament, and things got worse for the Germans when Yeltsin Tejeda leveled for Costa Rica in the 58th minute. An own goal from Manuel Neuer, who diverted Juan Vargas’ header into his own net, then put Costa Rica ahead in the 70th minute.

That goal meant Costa Rica were going through and Spain were on the way out, but Kai Havertz made an instant impact, flicking home and equalizer three minutes later.

That goal saved Spain, but not Germany. Although Havertz and Niclas Fullkrug added further goals to give Germany a 4-2 win, it was the hollowest of victories.

There was also tension as Morocco and Croatia qualified from Group F, with Morocco going through as group winners after they won an entertaining game 2-1 against Canada.

Hakim Ziyech accepted a gift from the Canadian defense to chip the ball into an empty net from around 30 meters after a horrible defensive mix-up.

The Moroccans soon doubled their lead in the 23rd minute thanks to striker Youssef En Nesyri, who held off his marker and scored a powerful strike on the run.

It looked to be game over, but the Canadians, who were already out of the tournament, showed spirit and a slice of luck when Nayef Aguerd deflected a shot into his own net.

The second half saw the Canadians go all out for an equalizing goal, and veteran striker Junior Hoilett was desperately unlucky to see his header hit the underside of the bar and bounce clear.

Morocco’s win meant that either Croatia or Belgium would be going home, and a 0-0 draw meant it was the Belgians, despite Roberto Martinez’s men playing their best football of the tournament.

Romelu Lukaku came on as a halftime substitute for Belgium, but missed several chances in the closing minutes, seeing one shot hit the post on the hour.

He was then unable to control a header, which went just over the bar, before flicking another chance wide with four minutes left to play.

His worst miss came in injury time when Thorgan Hazard’s cross evaded everyone, but with the goal at his mercy, the ball hit Lukaku’s chest and rolled tamely into the hands of the keeper.

After the match, Martinez announced he would not continue as Belgium coach. ■

  1. Hi there! What a great article regarding the Moroccan victory over Canada in their World Cup match.

Their win was due to their hard work, dedication, and skill.

The Moroccans scored two quick goals in the first 23 minutes of play thanks to Youssef En Nesyri’s powerful strike on the run and Nayef Aguerd’s own goal.

Despite this, Canada showed resilience as Junior Hoilett almost equalized with his header hitting the underside of the bar.

I thought it was unfortunate for Belgium that they had to make an early exit from the tournament despite playing some fantastic football under Roberto Martinez’s leadership.

Romelu Lukaku could have scored late in injury time if only his chance didn’t hit his chest and rolled into the keeper’s hands.

It was a heartbreaking match, but I’m sure we will see more great performances from both teams in the future.

I appreciate Martinez’s decision to step down as manager of Belgium, even though it was clear that he had done a fantastic job at inspiring and leading his team.

He should be commended for this selfless act, which shows his dedication to furthering Belgian football in the next World Cup.

His commitment to excellence is commendable and an example for other coaches.

It’s always sad to see teams leaving the tournament, but Morocco has shown their true potential by making it through their group stage with only one defeat, while Canada can take pride in their strong performance.

In conclusion, this was an exciting game and an excellent result for Morocco. Congratulations to both teams!

    Thank you for your article.

Reading it was enjoyable, and I’m sure many readers have benefited from it.

    Keep up the excellent work!
