Museveni asks clergy to join Govt anti-corruption campaign

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | President Yoweri Museveni has asked the clergy to embrace and support the government anti-corruption campaign.

According to Museveni, most corrupt officials and their beneficiaries are often in churches where they pay allegiance to certain clergy, which makes them the right people to preach against the vice.

This was contained in Museveni’s speech read for him by the Vice president, Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi at the consecration of Reverend Sanctus Lino Wanok as the new Bishop of Lira Catholic Diocese on Saturday. “Corruption retards development and frustrates government effort to bring development to the people. We must all fight the vice collectively,” said Museveni in the speech.

He also applauded the Catholic Church for actively getting involved in the delivery of various social services including health and education among others. He cautioned people of Lango against laziness and urged them to embark on hard work to eradicate poverty.

Ssekandi revealed that the president had procured a vehicle for Bishop Wanok that will be delivered soon. Bishop Wanok replaced Rev. Joseph Franzeli who retired in November last year. Bishop Wanok was born on April, 7th, 1957 at Ukuru Pamach village in Zombo District.

He was ordained deacon on August 31st, 1986 at Ediofe Parish. He became Priest on September, 27th, 1986 at Warr Parish. He holds a Doctorate in Biblical Theology from Pontifical Urban University Rome where he attended studies between 1991-1995.
