Museveni challenges Mothers’ Union to embrace wealth creation, free education

President Museveni launching unveiled a community social economic transformation programme for Mothers Union at Timnah Schools, Luwero town council on sunday

 

Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | President Yoweri Museveni has appealed to the women under the Mothers’ Union to encourage Christians to embrace wealth creation and universal education programmes.

On Sunday, President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni graced the closing ceremony for the Annual Mothers’ Union Conference for the Buganda Region. The Conference was held at Timnah Schools in Luwero town council from Thursday 29th –August to Sunday 1st of September, 2024.

The Conference was held under the theme ‘Let Us Thrive to Work So that we don’t become a challenge to the community’.

Josephine Kasaato the President of the Mothers Union for Buganda region told President Museveni that during the conference women re-affirmed their faith in religion and acquired skills in economic empowerment.

Kasaato presented to Museveni a community social-economic transformation programme which intends to empower women to contribute to the prosperity of their families.

Kasaato asked Museveni to donate 500 million shillings to implement the programme and a coaster van to transport the women in their programme.

First Lady Janet Museveni asked the Mothers’ Union to ensure homes are safe havens for children and give them the necessary support to stay in school.

First Lady Museveni narrated that when her husband was in the bush in Luwero, he could take full responsibility for the family including paying hospital bills during delivery.

She added that it was unforgivable for children to drop out of school because the mothers couldn’t afford to provide them with sanitary towels and lunch at school.

She also reiterated her advice to mothers to pack food for their children at school.

President Yoweri Museveni said that he was impressed that the Mothers Union had awakened the Christians to work for prosperity and asked them to embrace government wealth initiatives which include the Parish Development Model and Emyooga

However, Museveni also implored the Mothers Union to join government efforts to ensure all children stay in school.

He explained that although the government introduced Universal Primary and Secondary Education, many children still drop out of school.

Museveni explained that although eleven million pupils attend primary schools, only two million reach secondary schools, with others unaccounted for.

He asked the Mothers Union to encourage Christians to take children in nearby UPE and USE schools to address some challenges that may be forcing children to drop out of school.

President Museveni pledged 500 million Shillngs towards the Mothers Union community social economic transformation programme and coaster van to ease transport for the group.
