Namuganza promises to build NRM women’s resilience and livelihood

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Minister of Lands and an aspirant for the second National Chairperson of the NRM, Persis Namuganza has said her focus will be on the welfare of women and youth in the party.

Namuganza also the MP Bukono County faces Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga who is the incumbent second National Chairperson NRM representing women.

In a phone interview with Uganda Radio Network -URN Namuganza said that majority of NRM supporters are women and youths, but when you look at many of them at the moment, they are distressed and living poorly.

She says this state of women and youth does not inspire more women or youth to join the party, and her role as an incoming second National chairperson is to transform the lives of these groups.

Namuganza says that in order for the women and youth to love NRM, their welfare is key and needs to be addressed. She says that women and youth need to be empowered economically, politically and socially but adds that they have been let down.

She says for instance the proposals of supporting the groups through savings and credit cooperative societies (SACCOS) has never come through yet the NRM has been preaching this for some time.

Namuganza adds that there has also not been a single conference of NRM women and their agenda, and she is coming as a woman of action to make sure all these can work.

She adds that as it stands, the women’s section under the ruling party has not taken charge with women and youths suffering and the women NRM leaders have kept quite.

Namuganza said as she contests, she is not scared of anyone and is hopeful that the NRM women and youth will vote for her. She says even though she has not spoken out in public and paraded her supporters, she is working hard to lead the women in NRM in that line.

While speaking to journalists upon her nomination few days ago, Kadaga said, she is confident that the NRM members who trust her leadership will again vote for her. “I want to assure NRM members across the country that I have been formally nominated; I want to tell them that I’m ready to serve you and I’m looking forward to your support as usual,” said Kadaga.

The elections for the NRM party positions will happen on August 3rd.
