NRM sweeps youth council elections in Wakiso district amidst teargas

Police

Wakiso, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has today sweep all the nine positions contested for during the district youth council elections for Wakiso district.

There were running battles as Police fired teargas to disperse rowdy youths who attempted to grab the ballot box as the voting exercise progressed.

The chaos ensued as they attempted to block some members from casting their votes accusing them of being above the voting age bracket.

The presiding officer George Mukalazi declared Iddi Matovu the chairperson.

Matovu polled 54 votes against Democratic Party (DP)’s Jonathan Semukuye who got 32 votes.

Matovu said he is happy the elections were held in a free and fair manner. He  commended the youth for the active participation they exhibited since the elections started at village level.

However, Semukuye who lost the election as chairperson has contested the results alleging that the genuine voters were blocked from participating in the exercise and instead those who were not eligible were allowed to participate.

Semukuye accused the presiding officer of conducting the exercise without considering the national identification cards. But he ruled out petitioning the results in court or at the electoral commission.

Other members of the district youth council who were voted include the vice chairperson Arnold Muyomba, Grace Nandawula for female youth affairs, Sharon Nakintu for students affairs, John Mwenkanya for labour affairs, Gayi Mudasil for finance, Yudaaya Nakintu for sports, Patrick Luzinda as the general secretary and Haruna Mayanja.

NRM spokesperson for Wakiso district Muwanga Lutaaya predicted a massive win for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other candidates in Wakiso following the party’s triumph in the youth elections.
