Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu (OBR) is seeking 25 Billion Shillings for the construction of the Buhikira Royal Palace.

The palace was in November 2016 destroyed during an army led raid in which the Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere and more than 200 others were arrested and more than 100 royal guards killed.

Before the palace attack, security officers alleged that the palace was a training ground for royal guards who planned to destabilize the country.

The palace located a kilometer away from Kasese town is now a shadow of its past, years after it was attacked. There is no sight of the huts outside the palace which accommodated the royal guards.

Inside the palace, grass has overgrown in the vast compound. There is no indication that it was once a royal palace. The large grass-thatched building that housed the Rwenzururu Parliament and storage of royal regalia is no more. No single remains of the building can be traced.

The Kingdom Prime Minister Joseph Kule Muranga says the kingdom has started a fundraising drive to restore the kingdom palace and its features. He adds that the palace will comprise of a conference hall, offices, among other facilities.

According to Muranga, they have approached the King’s subjects and well-wishers in the diaspora to support the drive.

In August, the Rwenzururu King Mumbere appointed Muranga Prime Minister, replacing the prime ministerial commission. The commission was running the kingdom’s affairs on behalf of Mumbere who was arrested in 2016 after the army raided his palace.
