Parent on the run after clobbering headteacher

Sembabule, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police are hunting for a parent in Sembabule district who raided Kirembe Muslim Primary School with a machete and canned the headteacher for sending back his son for school requirements.

Yakubuh Mwambala, the officer in charge of Lwebitakuli police station, says that they are hunting for Abdul Magezi for beating up Jamiruh Mwanje, the Headteacher of Kirembe Muslim Primary School in Lwebitakuli sub-county.

He explains that Magezi, who was armed with a club and machete raided the school on Tuesday evening, causing a stampede after which he pounced on the headteacher and beat him up. Magezi inflicted injuries on Mwanje after assaulting him with a club while threatening to hack him with a machete.

Mwanje told police that his trouble started when he sent Magezi’s son for his birth certificate to enable the school to register him for the final examinations. Besides the physical attacks, the headteacher also suffered emotional trauma because the scuffle occurred in full view of the learners.

Mwambala says that detectives have recorded statements from the victim and eyewitnesses who confirmed the incident. “I sent officers to his home but they reached after the suspect had fled but our hunt for him is still on. He will certainly be arrested and held accountable for his actions,” he noted.

Mwanje indicates that the suspect was too furious and declined to listen to any explanations that were being offered to him. He says that schools had earlier reminded parents of the need to submit their children’s birth certificate as a requirement for registration but Mwanje did not comply with the request.
