Parliament passes motion to rename Wampewo avenue after BMK

Parliament has moved to rename Wampewo Avenue, located in upscale Kampala, as BMK Avenue in recognition of late Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige’s philanthropy and contribution to the economy.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Parliament has paid tribute to the late businessman Bulaimu Muwanga Kibirige commonly known as BMK and passed a motion to have Wampewo avenue in Kampala renamed after him.

Wampewo avenue stretches from Jinja road roundabout adjacent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to upper Kololo terrace road, above the airstrip. It is the same avenue where one of his investments, Hotel Africana and BMK Building are located.

The late Kibirige died last week, losing a six year old battle with cancer. Yesterday, several members of Parliament took to the floor of the house to pay tribute to a selfless man who supported the needy and the poor and thrived in his business genuinely.

This was in response to a motion tabled by the Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko who informed parliament that the late contributed to the development of the country’s tax base, tourism and he was not a person who shunned competition like most business people.

Nsereko also asked parliament to support the renaming of Wampewo avenue to BMK avenue to honor the work he has done for the country.

The motion was seconded by the Igara East MP Michael Mawanda and government chief whip Thomas Tayebwa who both supported the idea of renaming Wampewo avenue and eulogized him as a person who has supported and assisted many Ugandans.

Earlier, Kampala Lord Mayor Elias Lukwago said that naming the roads was not the mandate of Pariament but that of KCCA. But the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among said that under the Kampala Capital City Authority Act, the government has the powers over KCCA.
