Parliamentary aspirant passes on hours to NRM primaries

Late. Steven Wako

Iganga, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | Steven Wako, an aspiring candidate for the Kigulu South parliamentary seat has passed on just hours to the NRM party primaries. Wako, a renowned businessman in Jinja and Iganga district, was involved in a road accident in Kakira town council along the Jinja-Iganga highway on Thursday.

He was severely injured during the accident and rushed to the Jinja regional referral hospital emergency unit for further management. But Wako’s condition deteriorated before he died this morning at 3 am.

The deceased was set to face off today in the NRM Primaries with the incumbent Kigulu South MP, Andrew Kaluya, the Iganga district LCV chairperson, Patrick Kayemba, Milton Muwuma and Mbigiti Kisubi.

Steven Ivulube, the deceased’s political assistant says that Wako has left a political vacuum in Kigulu south due to his non-violent means of campaigning. “My candidate was promising and attracting more women and elderly supporters to his side due to the peaceful mode of rallying support in the different sub-counties and we shall surely miss him,” he added.

Yazid Kirunda, the Iganga NRM district registrar says that that the election will, however, go on as planned. “We are grieving together with the family but I have been instructed to conduct elections in that constituency despite losing one of the contestants,” says Kirunda.
