The parliament committee on equal opportunities has ordered the immediate closure of Blue Wave Beverages Uganda Limited factory over failure to comply with minimal health standards.
The directive was issued by the chairperson of the committee Mohammad Nsereko after an interface on Tuesday with the directors of the beverages company and officials from Uganda National Bureau of Standards.
Nsereko ordered the Minister of State for Trade Michael Werikhe to ensure that the directive is implemented. The committee expects the company to stop producing and selling bottled water immediately.
Nsereko said the decision was reached after a whistle-blower approached the committee with samples of Blue Wave mineral water bottles, which he said, were found to be contaminated.
“These water samples are contaminated and they are not fit for human consumption. We have immediately suspended the production and supply of blue wave until the whistle-blower’s claims are verified,”said Nsereko.
Nsereko told the press that all products of Blue Wave Beverages Uganda Limited have now been suspended on the market for failure to meet quality standards needed to avoid causing diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
He said the move is intended to tame the sector to ensure customers receive quality and standard products.
