Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Ministry of Water and Environment has embarked on a plan to restore and protect River Nyamwamba in Kasese District.
The plan involves the planting of bamboo trees on the river banks and supporting the livelihoods of communities along the catchment area. The ministry will also install a flood forecasting and early warning system and do spot cleaning of the river.
The 30 Billion Shillings plan is expected to start this month and will last eight to twelve months.
Callist Tindimugaya, the Commissioner for Water Resources Planning and Regulation at the Ministry of Water and Environment says that the plan intends to address issues of extreme climate impact using an integrated water resource management plan.
He also says that they want to provide alternatives to persons who have been depending on the river for their survival.
Tindimugaya also says that the ministry with funding from World Bank is developing an integrated water resources development and management plan for the whole of Rwenzori Region. He adds that total desilting of the river will be done only after a comprehensive study is done.
Harold Muhindo Tonny the Bokonzo West MP said the intervention is a follow up on series of engagements they have been having with the government to create long term interventions to control flooding. Muhindo also asked the ministry to extend the interventions to other rivers in the district.
Atkins Godfrey Katusabe the Bukonzo East MP blames the government for wasting resources in studies while ignoring initial recommendations by experts.
