Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Inspectorate of Government (IG) office in Mbale region has arrested two individuals in connection with corruption allegations.
The suspects are Paulo Manyasi, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bukusu Police Post in Manafwa District, and Laban Hafulu, an assistant office attendant at the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) office in Tororo.
According to Paula Dominic Baru, the Mbale Regional Inspectorate Officer, the arrests occurred on Monday.
The individuals are accused of soliciting bribes from the relatives of a defilement suspect, falsely claiming that funds were needed for court proceedings.
The arrests followed reports from Robert Muyesa, the father of the accused defiler. Muyesa’s son, Godfrey Wataba, a primary teacher at Namisindwa, was arrested on March 8, 2024, on allegations of defiling his 14-year-old pupil and is currently being held at Malukhu Government Prison.
Preliminary investigations by the IGG reveal that the two suspects demanded three million Shillings from Muyesa to expedite the dismissal of the defilement case in court.
