Police resolves to charge Mityana commander with aggravated robbery

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed report.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID has resolved to arraign Assistant Superintendent of Police- ASP Dennis Kyeptoyek, the commander of Nyanzi police station in Mityana alongside nine others in court on charges of aggravated robbery.

Kyeptoyek’s trouble started on June 7, when a group of men intercepted a truck belonging to Mukwan industries and robbed 35 million Shillings. The CID headquarters tasked detectives at Wamala police region to trace and arrest the robbers.

During investigations, detectives learnt that the robbers were boda boda riders from Cooper Complex in Kampala who were recruited into the robbery by the truck driver Moses Serunkuma. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga identified the boda boda riders as Raphael Semaganda, Peter Mukalazi, Yoweri Kironde, Ibra Kyoita, Topher and Andrew.

Police say the robbers hid at Nyanzi river in Kijojo village, Manyi sub county and came out of their hideout when Serunkuma hooted. Enanga says that based on the latest report by detectives after the theft of the Shillings 35 million, Serunkuma and his accomplices contacted Yoweri Kironde to provide them security.

He says that when they got in touch with Kyeptoyek, he asked for Shillings 15 million.

He says that CID team has so far recovered Shillings 10.5 million. Based on the evidence, police have resolved that Kyeptoyek appear alongside the other suspects in a criminal court as opposed to the police disciplinary court.

This is not the first time a police commander is in trouble over robbery. ASP Bright Amutuhire who was the commandant of operations at Kajjansi police station was arrested in 2019 over robbery.
