Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Mukono district Covid-19 task force has failed to distribute relief food due to lack of fuel and personal protective equipment.
Mukono was added to Kampala and Wakiso among the districts receiving food from the Office of the Prime Minister. The food is meant for vulnerable people who were affected by the lockdown as a measure to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
The Resident District Commissioner Fred Bamwiine notes that the district was supposed to start distributing food to the residents but they lack fuel for the trucks to collect the food from Kampala.
“We would be having enough food but the challenge is fuel and trucks to carry food from the prime minister’s office to our stores and then communities”
Currently, the food distribution committee is rallying LCI chairpersons to mobilize funds to buy fuel and hire trucks to supply food to the community.
Muhammad Wasswa Takwana the LCI chairperson of Ggulu ward notes that food distribution exercise had started in his area but was halted after running out of fuel. He notes that his ward has over 700 households but so far only 200 households have received food.
“The task force has given us a chance to hire trucks and it provides security and Red Cross team to assist in the distribution of food in the community. They have trucks but require maintenance”
The LCI chairperson of Kavule ward Ann Kayitiro is worried about her residents staying for more days without food after trying soliciting money to buy fuel and failed after they received communication from the task force.
Joachim Ssendi the vice chairperson of Lweza ward notes that he devoted his truck to reach out food to his residents but task force also is delaying exercise claiming lack of protective gears for the distribution team.
