Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Residents of Bussi Island in Bussi sub-county, Wakiso district are living in fear over the increasing number of hippos roaming around the island.
They claim that the hippos come during day and night and move in a group with their young ones as they feed on the grass on the shores of the lake and sometimes cross to their gardens. Robert Mutagejja, a resident of Bussi Island says that what scares them most is the hippopotamus go near homes, where they could attack people.
Charles Mukalazi, the Bussi sub-county LC 3 chairperson says that the hippos have caused trouble for people working on the shores of the lake and those on the island. He claims that in the past the hippos have killed over 30 people in the sub-county.
Noor Njuki Mbabaali, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Entebbe sub-district says that he has been receiving reports on the hippos and has written a lot of letters to Uganda Wildlife Authority to help catch them.
