Reveler shot dead in Natete bar brawl

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A reveler has been killed in a bar brawl in the Kampala city suburbs of Natete in Rubaga division.

The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire has identified the deceased as 43-year-old Magidu Mugwanya, a resident of Kibumbiro B zone in Busega parish, Rubaga division.

According to police, Mugwanya was gunned down by another an unidentified reveler following a disagreement in a bar belonging to one Patience at around 5:00 pm on Wednesday.

Owoyesigyire says detectives from Natete police station visited the scene and recovered two bullet cartridges from a pistol and unspecified items from the deceased’s vehicle as part of the exhibits in the ongoing investigations.

In March last year, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni closed all places of social gatherings including bars to contain the spread of COVID-19.

However, the Director of Operations in the Uganda Police Force, AIGP Edward Ochom has severally accused police stations of shielding bars within their areas of jurisdiction to continue operating in violation of the COVID-19 directives.

On Monday, police pinned the officers at Nateete police station for conniving with bar owners to operate illegally.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says the Professional Standards Unit –PSU is under instructions to reign in on the errant officers.

Over the weekend, the police alert squad raided Best Hotel within the vicinity of Nateete police station on the instructions of Ochom and arrested more than 120 revelers found drinking alcohol and dancing.
