Rise in cases of incest irks Lugbara cultural leaders

One out of ten cases of teenage pregnancies registered is a result of incest.

Arua, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Lugbara cultural institution has raised concern about the high numbers of cases of incest registered during the lockdown.

The cultural institution has registered 600 cases of teenage pregnancies in Arua, Terego, Maracha, Madi-Okollo and Yumbe since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ismael Tuku, the Prime Minister of the Lugbara Cultural Institution says that unfortunately, one out of ten cases registered is a result of incest, which is an abomination.

He was speaking at the launch of the Lugbara anthem in Arua city on Wednesday.

Moses Mandebo, the information officer for Lugbara Kari Institution says that currently, the cultural institution can’t punish those involved in incest because the punishments were scrapped on grounds of human rights.

Lucy Stella Ezaru, the Minister of Gender in the Lugbara Cultural Institution says that they have been holding dialogues to sensitize communities on the dangers of teenage pregnancy and incest.

About the anthem 

The Lugbara Cultural Institution anthem has three stanzas and was composed by Deogratious Mercy following a call by the institution to the members of the public to come up with an anthem.
