Robert Elangot dies at 87

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | John Robert Elangot, the former Deputy Governor at Bank of Uganda has died. He was 87.

Elangot, who served as the Central Bank Deputy Governor between 1981 and 1989, breathed his last at  International Hospital Kampala on Saturday. He was hospitalized in late September due to multiple organ complications, according to David Malinga Akol, a relative found at the Elangot’s home in Soroti.

He says Elangot’s health condition started deteriorating in 2012 and had surgery twice in India after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He subsequently developed multiple organ problems which kept him in and out of the hospital in recent years.

Elangot, an Economist from Serere district served in various capacities in the 1960s and 1970s, before rising to become the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda. He started his career as a Labour Officer in Arua in 1955 before moving to Fort Portal where he served as the District Labour Officer. He then became an Administrative Secretary of the Teso District Association, and District Commissioner for Lango before becoming a secretary of the Bank of Uganda in 1963. Later, he became the deputy governor in 1981 and served in the role until 1989.

After retiring, Elangot has been chairing different financial institutions like the Microfinance Support Centre, Uganda Commercial Bank, Cairo Bank among others.  Frances Akello, a member of the Legislative Assembly and the first female MP in Teso remembers Elangot as a very brilliant, exemplary and social man whose talent inspired many people in the region.

According to Malinga, the tentative burial program for the late Elangot is Saturday, November 13, 2021, at his home in Abilayep, Serere district.
