Three local security officers of Kawaala- Zone 111 in Rubaga Division have been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each after being convicted of mob justice by the High court in Kampala.
Evidence in court showed that Kizito Gozanga, Abdullah Kaweesi and Disan Tumwesigye on the night of April 25, 2013, lynched 19-year-old William Ramzey Kwizera whom they suspected to be a thief.
Justice Yasin Nyanzi based his conviction on the evidence of a single eye witness James Kiiza who testified that on the fateful day at about 2.00 am, he heard the late Kwizera calling out for help. When he got out, he saw Gonzaga, Kaweesa and Tumwesigye holding big sticks and a panga beating and cutting the deceased.
The convicts accused the late Kwizera of vandalizing car lights and a door system button belonging to Kizito.
While sentencing the accused on Thursday, Justice Nyanzi expressed concern about the increasing number of mob killings where many innocent people lose their lives .
The judge said he was disturbed by the manner in which the late Kwizera was killed by the people who were in authority and had the duty to protect his life.
He ruled that 25 years imprisonment was to send a signal to society that mob justice must stop.
