Rugby cranes to camp in Cape Town ahead of world cup 7s

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda Rugby Cranes will camp in Cape Town, South Africa ahead of the 2018 Rugby World Cup 7s.

Ramzy Olinga, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) told URN on Wednesday that the team will have 10 days of training at the Stellenbosch High Performance Centre in Cape Town.

“This is one of the best rugby training camps in the world used by the top teams. We are confident it will help our team prepare better as we get closer to the World Cup,” added Olinga. The Rugby World Cup 7s will take place in California, USA July 20-22.

Uganda qualified for the Rugby World Cup last year after beating Zimbabwe 22-10 to retain the Africa 7s Rugby Cup. New Zealand are the reigning World Cup champions.

Olinga said the team under the watchful eyes of Tolbert Onyango has intensified the training programme. “The follows a strict training block with most of the sessions taking place between 5-7am,” added Olinga. He said they have also hired a high performance coach, Ninette Kruyt from South Africa to help the team.

“She handles the team for about 10 days depending on the training block. Kruyt is also a strength and conditioning expert, ” added Olinga.

Uganda together with South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe will represent the African continent at the 2018 Rugby World Cup 7s. The Rugby Cranes will open their campaign against Samoa in the preliminary round on July 20th at the AT&T Park in San Francisco, USA.

After failing to impress at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia, the Rugby Cranes are hoping to put-up an impressive show at the World Cup 7s.
