Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Rwenzururu Queen Mother Nyamukama Christine Biira Mukirania has been admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of Case Hospital.

Mukirania was taken to the ICU on Sunday after her condition worsened despite having registered significant improvement according to Rwenzururu Kingdom spokesperson Yona Maathe.

The 85-year old has been battling diabetes for a long period of time, however, her condition deteriorated last week and was rushed to Case Unit.

Maathe says that the Queen Mother had initially started to recuperate steadily only to relapse after her pressure shot up rapidly on Sunday.

“Nyamukama is now in ICU, her pressure shot up rapidly. She developed a blister on her foot causing her excruciating pain leading to hypertension. Let us continue praying for her.” Maathe said on Monday.

Before her condition depreciated, Mukirania had on Friday met her son, Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere for the first time since the Rwenzururu clashes in November 2016.

The Queen Mother had lost contact with Mumbere because of her closeness to President Museveni.

Shortly after the palace attack, Mukirania accused Mumbere of practising witchcraft and refusal to heed to advice which soured the relationship between him and the state.

The situation was, however, worsened by an August 2017 incident in which Mukirania declared that she had replaced her son and taken over management of the cultural institution.

The move not only was resisted by the kingdom but also distanced her further from Mumbere.

According to Maathe, after attending court on Friday at the International Crimes Division of Kololo, Mumbere paid a visit to Mukirania.

“I am happy to report improved relations between His Majesty and the Queen Mother.HM found time to visit her mother at Case Clinic in Kampala. The two had a cordial interaction after a long spell of unholy quietness.” He said.

On Saturday, President Museveni visited the Queen Mother before he flew to Ethiopia for the African Union Summit.
