Soroti man lynched for child sacrifice

Soroti, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  An angry mob in Soroti district has lynched a 25-year-old man for allegedly killing his niece in a ritual.

Thomas Ekwaru, a resident of Ogolo Village is reported to have killed his three-year-old niece, identified as Loyce Ingedu on Sunday after picking her from her parents- who are both dumb.

David Ongom Mudong, the East Kyoga Region Police Spokesman, says Olwelai Police Post recorded a case of a missing child on Sunday from a concerned citizen, David Ochan.

He however, says that when officers started investigations, community members engaged Ekwaru who was last seen carrying the child. 

According to Mudong, the suspect succumbed to pressure from the community and led residents to two different scenes where the body parts of the victim were found wrapped in a polythene bag.

Cases of mob action by the community in Soroti are on the rise, according to police records.

So far, three people have been killed by angry mobs in Soroti over the last four months.

Ongom says that two other people were rescued by police when angry mob members descended on them over theft of a motorcycle in Gweri Sub County.
