Nabilatuk, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Suspected warriors have abducted five women from Narisai settlement camp in Nabilatuk district. The women were cutting grass for thatching huts from the thickets of Lorengedwat, some 5 kilometers away from Lorengedwat trading centre when they were kidnapped on Monday and led to an unknown place.
Milton Odongo, the Nabilatuk Resident District Commissioner says that this is the first case of abduction by warriors who have lately started targeting civilians as well as security personnel in what appears to be a protest against the ongoing disarmament.
Intelligence information shows that some of the warriors with illegal firearms have deserted their homes and retired to the bush where they cannot easily be accessed by security organs. The abduction has attracted widespread condemnation from leaders in the region.
Mary Goretti Kitutu, the State Minister for Karamoja Affairs who is in the region to monitor the Dryland Integrated Development Project under the Office of the Prime Minister said the abduction reflects the inhumane behaviour of the warriors. She described the abduction as provocative to the government.
The Nabilatuk LC V Chairperson Paul Lokol condemned the act as unacceptable. “We are very disappointed by such a criminal act. They are mothers and their families are worried. We do not know where they were led to and how they are.
This is very dangerous,” he said. The RDC Milton Odongo said that UPDF were tracking the warriors to rescue the women.
