Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | Xinhua | Tanzanian authorities said Monday they have launched a full investigation into the cause of a plane crash into Lake Victoria on Nov. 6 that killed 19 people.
Gerson Msigwa, the chief government spokesperson, said the cabinet that met in the capital Dodoma directed local aviation experts to join forces with international aviation experts in investigating the accident and establish its cause.
Seventeen passengers and two pilots were killed after Precision Air’s aircraft crash-landed in Lake Victoria on Nov. 6 at around 8:20 a.m. local time as it approached the Bukoba airport from the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam. A total of 24 people, including 22 passengers and two cabin crew members, were rescued.
Msigwa told a news conference after the cabinet meeting chaired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan that the first report of the investigation will be released in 14 days’ time followed by a preliminary report to be released in 30 days and the final report to be issued in 12 months after the accident.
He said the cabinet also directed that all disaster management authorities should be reinforced to enable them to respond to disasters, including accidents.
Msigwa said the cabinet appealed to citizens to remain patient as investigations were underway and the full report of the investigations will be made public.
He said the cabinet thanked all that were involved in the rescue efforts, including public and private institutions, health workers, fishermen, and individuals.
