RECEIVING THE AWARD: Manzi Mugisa (riht) and Rhoda Musiima from CoCREATE Advertising

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Young Silverback competition organized by Uganda Advertising Association was designed to create a platform for young creatives in the agency, corporate and art institutions to showcase their creativity.

The competition started on Thursday with the Film candidates receiving their briefs at Swangz Avenue and followed through till Friday when the rest of the shortlisted candidates in the Design, Digital, Media, Print, and PR categories were issued their briefs by Frank Muthusi the UAA Chairman at the Kampala Serena Hotel.

The young silverbacks were given 24 hours to solve the briefs from renowned brands like Uganda Breweries Limited, KCB Bank and UNICAF University and presented to a panel of judges made up of industry experts.

“Upon receiving the briefs, we decided to attempt the Digital and Design categories as those are our specialists. Using the same approach we use for our daily tasks, we started with a quick dipstick, where we visited areas in Kiwatule, Acacia Mall, and Acacia Avenue and proceeded to do some tel-research to ascertain the severity of the problems highlighted in the briefs.

After hours of doing this ground research, we began brainstorming and started compiling insisting on the information we had gathered from the field. These insights were the golden thread of our ideas and solutions to the brands.

Once we locked in the key insight, we zeroed in on the ideas, and we started unpacking the ideas using design and digital channels: this took us a whole night awake, creating, recreating and fine-tuning our pitch decks. In the morning, we presented our Digital and Design pitch decks and left them to the judges,” narrated The CoCREATE participants, Rhoda Musiima and Manzi Mugisa from Team Pen and Ink.

“It was a tough competition because everyone who participated was very talented in the creative field. In hindsight, we are glad that we took part in the competition because we were pushed beyond our limits. In fact, turning around 2 briefs in 24 hours seemed impossible but we did it!” added the thrilled team.

Upon successfully pitching their ideas, the young silverback waited for the Silverback Awards Gala Night where winners were to be announced.

“The prize of the Young Silverback Digital Competition goes to the team that presented the most innovative, progressive and digital-driven solution for our brand,” said Sylvia Nashuha, the KCB Marketing Manager, Corporate and Business.
