A police officer attached to Rukungiri police station revealed to our reporter on condition of anonymity that by the time the suspects escaped, Muhoozi was supposed to be on duty as the officer in-charge of the counter, and Tumwesigye and Masereka as the station night guards were off for unknown reasons.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for Kigezi region says that suspects in the male detention section made a strong repeated alarm claiming that one of their fellow detainees had collapsed and needed urgent attention.
Maate says that the alarm attracted Special Police Constable Christopher Mujurizi who opened the door to check what had happened. But in the process, the suspects grabbed and overpowered him and took off.
By the time other police officers at the counter rushed to help Mujurizi to close the door, 10 of the suspects had managed to escape. Maate says that Muhoozi and Masereka are being held and will face charges of being absent from the station without official leave and neglect of duty.
He also says that efforts to trace and arrest Tumwesigye are ongoing.
Maate also calls upon members of the public to help police in tracing the suspects so that they are re-arrested and charged accordingly.
