The Independent’s Ronald Musoke wins Exceptional Journalism Award
It was an unforgettable day for The Independent when Ronald Musoke scooped the Nile Breweries Award for Exceptional Journalism at the Uganda National Journalism Awards organised by African Centre for Media Excellence.
Musoke had earlier been presented with the award for Best Feature Story for ‘Island of the Chimps’. The Exceptional Journalism Award is sponsored by Nile Breweries and comes with a cash prize of Shs3m.

Musoke said “To be recognised at such a prestigious event is humbling but also a fantastic endorsement. It also gives me joy to know that I have been recognised for the third consecutive year and obviously I wouldn’t have achieved this without the great support I get every day from my editors and colleagues at The Independent. These awards mean the world to me and can only inspire me to do greater journalism.”
The judges rewarded Musoke for his consistency, tenacity and knack for doing complex investigations. The category had the following nominations: Judith Atim – 93.3 KFM, Haggai Matsiko – The Independent, Suhail Mugabi – NTV Uganda, Ronald Musoke – The Independent, Carol Natukunda – New Vision.
Three other journalists of The Independent were also recognised. Haggai Matsiko was the runner up in the category of Data Journalism and also got a Honourable Mention in the category of Energy, Oil, Gas and Mining Reporting categories. Matsiko and Ian Katusiime came runner up in the category of Investigative Reporting. Katusiime also was also runner up in the category of Business, Economy and Finance Reporting. Flavia Nassaka also came second in the category of Political Reporting. Runners up received cash prizes of Shs1m.
A total of 23 journalists (FULL LIST OF NOMINEES ON PAGE 2) walked away with awards at the ceremony held at Golf Course hotel on April 20. The Chief Guest was Justice James Ogoola, former Principal Judge and Chairman of The Elders Forum.
