THIS WEEK: Facebook under fire over data breaches
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Social media giant Facebook is under heavy criticism over a data breach where information of 87million users could have been shared with Cambridge Analytica, a data mining firm, based in the UK. The UK firm and Facebook were already facing severe criticism when reports emerged that Cambridge Analytica had obtained millions of profiles of US citizens and used the data to build a software program to predict and influence voters for the election of now US President Donald Trump.
Most of the 87 million users were US citizens. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted Facebook’s data breaches saying it was a “huge mistake” for the company to fail to take responsibility over the data breaches. Facebook has always been lambasted for its lax privacy laws and Zuckerberg is expected to appear before the US Congress to explain the social media company’s measures to strengthen its privacy regulations.
