Makerere suspends new fees structure

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | After two days of strikes at Makerere University, Prof. Barnabus Nawangwe the Vice Chancellor on April 18 suspended the new plan to increase fees until further notice.

Nawangwe said the decision to suspend the fees increment in the colleges of Health Science, Veterinary Medicine and Humanities and Social Sciences was taken in order to allow the input of the students’ guild.

Earlier, the guild president was arrested together with about 20 colleagues amidst a scuffle between the police and students who were barring him from being pushed on a police vehicle.

The students were protesting against the new policies including payment of a minimum of Shs4million in fees per year for masters’ students, a plan to pay students a lunch allowance of shs4000 after scrapping meals in the halls of residence, removal of evening lectures and replacing of the government sponsorship scheme with the students’ loan scheme.
