THIS WEEK: Stella Nyanzi’s new mission in Luzira prison
Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Makerere University researcher and activist Stella Nyanzi declined bail by the Magistrates Court to teach inmates at Luzira prison how to use social media.
Nyanzi was charged with cyber harassment and offensive communication after she wrote Facebook posts insulting President Museveni’s late mother Esteri Kokundeka. She posted a grotesque poem on Facebook insulting Museveni’s mother a day after the President’s 74th birthday.
Her poem was widely condemned for the manner in which it attacked the President’s late mother but she was equally supported by those opposed to the government. She was remanded until Nov.22.
This is the second time Nyanzi is accused of offensive communication and cyber harassment. In April 2017, she was charged at Buganda Road Magistrate’s court for cyber harassment and offensive communication after she insulted Museveni on Facebook.
