Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police crime intelligence unit is holding three people, the suspected masterminds of house break-ins in parts of Kasubi and Nansana.
The trio was arrested in an intelligence-led operation in the areas of Nansana, Namungoona and Kasubi following numerous reports of night attacks on the residents by machete-wielding thugs.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire has identified the suspects as Frank Ainebyoona, William Ssenyondo and Nyesiiga Precious Kabiizi. A subsequent search on the premises of Frank Ainebyoona, one of the suspects led to the recovery of an assortment of suspected stolen items according to Owoyesigyire.
They include 10 plasma TVs of different sizes, eight laptops, three DVD players, one amplifier, 13 small speakers, four big bass speakers, four smartphones and six small phones. Another search conducted at William Sengendo’s premises led to the recovery of one big plier used for cutting padlocks, iron sheets and doors, a panga, sharp knives and a hammer.
Owoyesigyire noted that while the operations continue, the suspects will be arraigned in courts of law on allegations of being in possession of suspected stolen items.
House break-ins in Kampala metropolitan areas have increased in recent months according to the police. Most of the cases have been reported in the areas of Lungujja, Kasubi, Namungoona, Mengo Kisenyi, and Nansana, where criminals reportedly cut roof tiles and drug the victims to gain access to the properties.
According to the annual crime report 2020 compiled by the Police Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID, 10,113 cases of housebreaking were reported compared to 12,919 cases that were registered in 2019.
