UTB showcases Uganda’s varied species at the British Birdfair

Uganda‬ was represented at the British Birdfair at Rutland, where the tourism board showcased the spectacular ‪‎bird species found in the country August 19-21.

With over 1020 ‪‎bird species, Uganda has over 50% of the total bird species in ‪Africa and just over 11% of the world’s total.  It is one of the richest African birding destination.

The Birdfair encompasses the whole spectrum of the birdwatching industry whilst at the same time supporting global bird conservation

Uganda Tourism Board showcased The Pearl of Africa’s beauty. Among the highlights was a presentation discussing ‪birding‬ and eco-tourism‬ in Uganda by Miriam Magada of Go Uganda Safaris and Herbert Byaruhanga of Bird Uganda Safaris.

Ugandan birds include the Crested Cranes (recently named ‘Gray crowned crane’), Shoebill, Wattled plorer, Africa Fish Eagle, African Jacana, Saddle Billed Stock, Pelican, African Pigmy Geese and Narina’s Trogon.

According to bird watchers, birds like the Shoebill and many others in the Albertine rift Valley are difficult or impossible to find elsewhere.

Officials say the huge bird list is remarkable given the small size of the country of over 235,000 sqkm, which is approximately the size of Great Britain.
