Traders at Park yard market in down town Kampala were on Feb.27 left stranded as police sealed off their work station in the wee hours of the morning.
This came after the police engaged in running battles with traders a week before as they demonstrated against their eviction, something that left city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago briefly arrested.
Chaos started when stalls were demolished in a move to fulfill Kampala Minister Betty Kamya’s directive who had earlier given traders 30 days to vacate the place to let its owners develop it. Kamya had also earlier written to Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Jennifer Musisi requesting for illegal vendors to be evicted as Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium who are the rightful owners were in discussions with the authority on how to develop it.
