Kampala, Uganda | JULIUS BUSINGE | Information and Communication Minister Frank Tumwebaze has said that government is committed to harnessing the opportunities of digital technology in offering service delivery to the people.
He made the remarks at Sheraton Hotel on July 20 during the ICT stakeholders’ consultative workshop on Digital Uganda Vision.
The workshop was organised by the Ministry of ICT in partnership with National Information Technology Authority Uganda NITA, the Uganda Communications Commission UCC, and technology company INTEL. Government is currently developing a Digital Vision document which would fit in the country’s general development plan- the Vision 2040 document.
Tumwebaze said the new Digital Vision will define how to manage data, how to protect start up businesses, how to deal with e-commerce and infrastructure, tax administration and general regulation of government activities among others.
“We are here to consult you; tell us where you are sick and we inject you,” he said.
He said that the vision will also help government to police the internet, especially social media usage. It will also deal with issues of reducing threats related with pornography, terrorism among others.
“Tell us where we fall short and we improve,” he asked told the audience that included ICT experts, government officials, the private sector and students.
On the issue of enforcing ICT compliance within government agencies and ministries, Tumwebaze said he was going to propose to Cabinet to introduce ICT Compliance Audits for government agencies to see who is “letting us down”.
“We want to walk the talk; we shall not walk alone,” he said.
Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda said government is committed to exploiting all avenues available to integrate ICT into the country general growth agenda.
Currently, government is investing heavily in the National Data Transmission Backbone and Electronic Government Infrastructure (NBI/EGI) to connect all government institutions across the country to the internet in a bid to improve service delivery in all aspects.
