Two arrested over alleged theft of drugs in Arua city

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Two women in Ayivu West division, Arua city have been arrested for the alleged theft of drugs from Adumi health centre IV.

The suspects are Antoniata Nyakuru, 43, a midwife at Adumi health centre IV, and Judith Atako, 30 years, a resident of Ambala cell, Nyiovura ward, Ayivu division.

According to police, on Sunday, Atako was intercepted by the watchman with two bags containing an assortment of government drugs while attempting to leave the facility. Upon interrogation, she confessed that the drugs were given to her by the midwife.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile region police spokesperson says that police acted after they were informed by Marlon Avutia, the Mayor of Ayivu Division that locals attempted to lynch the two suspects who were being held at Adumi health centre IV.

She explains that police recovered 25 boxes of assorted drugs and medical supplies valued at approximately One Million Shillings.

Avutia described the actions of the suspects as unexpected, noting that the incident happened just a few days after they held a meeting with the staff members. He further commended the locals for their vigilance.

The latest incident comes just a month after two autoclave machines were stolen from Adumi health center IV and later recovered in Ariwara town, an economic hub in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Three people have since been arrested in connection with the matter.

The suspects are currently detained at Ayivu West division police headquarters at Onduparaka in Arua City.
