Two drown at Buleli landing site

Some fishermen identifying the bodies of the deacesed persons at Buleli landing site

Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Two people have drowned at Buleli landing site in Mpunge sub-county in Mukono district. The deceased have been identified as Peter Badaaza and Abudallah Wayikyamayiso.   They were ferrying a pig they had stolen to Gabba last night when they drowned. Fredah Muwanga Namyalo, the Mpunge sub-county LC III Chairperson, says that the deceased had stolen a pig belonging to Okwalinga and tried to escape with it on a boat.

“Badaaza and his friend Abdallah have been residents on the landing site for quite some time now. But they have been very notorious for breaking into people’s homes. Last night while escaping with the pig we believe it overpowered them and caused the boat to capsize,” she said.

Naume Katooko, a resident of Buleli alleges that Badaza had a loan that had taken a toll on him, which could have forced him into theft. Micheal Olwe, Mbaazi village Councillor, told URN “there is a lot of theft in the area and the neighbouring villages as most people have no source of income now. As people were chased from fishing they should be provided with alternative sources of income.”

He, however, notes that the” landing site is strategically located if only people engaged in agriculture they could easily transport their goods to the markets of Gabba.”  Sam Okwalinga, the owner of the pig says that he woke up on Monday morning only to find one of his pigs missing.

“As it is the usual routine to check on my pigs in the morning, upon reaching the pigsty I found that one of my pigs was missing. I was then told by some people that there is a pig that has been found near a boat in water, with a jacket, which had a national Id belonging to Peter Badaaza who was later found dead in the water.

He promised not to release the bodies until the deceased’s relatives pay him a fine of at least Shillings 250, 000 as compensation for his pig. Mukono District Police Commander- DPC Abubaker Musiho confirmed receiving a report from the O/C Mpunge police post about the incident.
