Two in custody in Kamwenge over impersonation

Kamwenge, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police in Kamwenge district is investigating two men for alleged impersonation and receiving money by false pretense. The suspects are Godfrey Kaijabwango and Nelson Kamwesiga, both residents of Nsorora village in Kamwenge town council, Kamwenge district.

Preliminary police investigations show that the suspects have been masquerading as officers from Kamwenge district human resource department to fleece money from their victims.

Mable Twegumye, the Officer in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department at Kamwenge Central Police Station told URN that Kamwesiga and Kaijabwango have been masquerading as Kamwenge district Human Resource Officer and Deputy Human Resource Officer respectively to con money from desperate job seekers.

According to Twegumye, they picked up the suspects when Kamwesiga asked David Baluku, a resident of Kasese district to pay him an undisclosed sum of money to secure him a teaching job in Kamwenge district once schools open.

Baluku became suspicious given the president’s pronouncement that schools will reopen in January next year and started hunting for the suspect to refund his money only to learn that he was not an employee of the district. This prompted Baluku to report a case at Kamwenge police station where they agreed to set a trap for the suspects.

Police used Baluku to track the suspects until when they arrested them at the district headquarters where they had gone to pick the money from their victim. According to Twegumye, the two have been charged with impersonation and obtaining money by false pretense, adding that they will appear in court once police inquiries are complete.
