Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has trained 500 Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers to participate in the enumeration process in the forthcoming National Housing and Population Census. These soldiers have completed a nine-day training program at Gaddaffi Barracks in Jinja district to serve as supervisors and enumerators for the census.
Dr. Chris Mukiza, the Executive Director of UBOS, highlighted the importance of involving the UPDF in the census, noting that it would have been challenging for civilian UBOS officials to access barracks to count soldiers and their families. He commended the UPDF for their participation, emphasizing the importance of counting every individual.
Brigadier General Ephraim Mugume, the head of the UPDF census committee, stressed the significance of utilizing the soldiers’ training in conjunction with the ideological principles of the UPDF. The soldiers, drawn from various units and formations of the Army, will serve as battalion supervisors and enumerators during the census.
The census activities are scheduled to commence on May 10th, 2024, with the government declaring it a public holiday to facilitate the smooth execution of the enumeration process. UBOS Chairman of the Board of Directors, Albert Byamugisha, emphasized the importance of the census exercise and urged all Ugandans to cooperate fully with the enumerators.
The census aims to gather crucial data on social, economic, and demographic statistics, which will inform policy and decision-making at both local and national levels. Mukiza and Byamugisha rallied Ugandans to provide accurate information during the enumeration process, highlighting its role in shaping the nation’s future development and progress.
In addition to the soldiers, over 200 police officers have also been trained to participate in the census, particularly focusing on enumeration activities within barracks. This comprehensive approach demonstrates the commitment of UBOS and the government to ensuring the success of the census exercise.
