Ugandan corporates embrace International Women’s Day

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Thursday turned out to be a dramatic day on the Ugandan broadcasting scene, with women MPs, artists and several public officials featuring as programming was adapted for Women’s Day.

Out of the studios, several institutions and brands also stepped up their messaging as they leaned more than usual this year into International Women’s Day.

On the marketing front, it turns out it is an international trend.

CNN Money March 8 quoted Tunay Firat, partnership development specialist at UN Women saying that while in the past she was the one initiating engagement with companies ahead of Women’s Day, this year, American companies have been asking her for months about ways to get involved.

“I would call it a societal shift,” she told CNN Money. “[Companies are] reaching out to me from all around the world.”

Something like this, she added “has never happened since the inception of UN Women,” the United Nation’s group dedicated to empowering women. Companies, she told CNN Money, hope a campaign featuring women’s empowerment will help them reach Millennials, who tend to value brands that embrace social causes.
