KAMPALA, Uganda | Xinhua | Ugandan attacking midfielder Sandra Nabweteme has signed for Liga MX Feminil outfit Santos Laguna.
The 27-year-old becomes the first African to sign for the Mexican outfit.
“I am very happy that Club Santos Laguna showed interest in me and signed me a few hours ago. I am happy to come to Mexico and I promise to help my new team win matches and trophies,” Nabweteme told Xinhua on Thursday.
Santos Laguna is based in Torreon, Coahuila. The team plays in Mexico’s top women’s football league, which began life in September 2017.
Nabweteme, who played league football in Uganda, at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in the USA, and in Iceland, Israel and Turkey, can play as a midfielder and attacker. She has also played for Uganda’s national junior and women’s senior teams.
Last week, fellow Ugandan women’s international Violah Nambi Ssebunya joined Italian Serie A side Napoli Femminile.
Coach Ayubu Khalifah Kiyingi said on Thursday, “I am happy that Nabweteme and Ssebunya have moved to new clubs and this comes with more targets which makes players improve. Having our players sign for foreign teams also helps to market our female footballers around the world.” ■
